The Float TankHistory
Floatation therapy was invented by Dr. John Lilly in the 1960s but didn’t gain
popularity
until the 70s. Dr. Lilly was interested in the physiology and psychology
of the meditative state when he started working on the effects of sensory
deprivation. When testing his earlier floatation tanks, he discovered
that a person could reach levels of relaxation in his tanks that could
only be achieved in deep meditation.
Today, floatation therapy tanks can be found in health spas and resorts, medical facilities, gyms, universities, and homes. NASA uses them to simulate the weightlessness and isolation of space.
